Selig trying to blackmail KC? « Thread Started on Jul 26, 2009, 4:59pm »
From Gammons' blog.
"If you are the Royals, not only are your revenues light, but the commissioner's office has threatened to take away your 2012 All-Star Game if you go ahead with the agreements you have in place with two high picks".
Basically they will sign their 3rd and 4th round picks near the signing deadline for well above slot recommendations, and Bud hates it when his precious slotting system is undermined by teams. If this is true, it sounds like just an excuse to give the game to the Red Sox, 'cause they're whining that they should get the game in 2012 because of the 100 year anniversary of their ballpark.
Or this is just an empty threat so they won't sign them to the overslot deals.
Also...revenues are up because of the renovations. Despite the losing, attendance this year is way up. So not sure what he meant there.
What makes this worse is that big market teams (not the Mets for some reason, they refuse to do this in the draft despite the resources to do this) like the Yankees/Red Sox/Angels do this EXACT same thing every year with late round selections! EXACT SAME THING! Look at the dollar amounts the Red Sox gave their draft picks last year, especially in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 13th, and 27th rounds! WAY OVER SLOT!!!

Bud Selig should go screw himself. He just stamps his feet when the big market teams do this but when a smaller market team tries to play the same game he threatens to takea way their ASG? The Royals should call his bluff.

They are calling his bluff (if it is indeed a bluff). Signed their 14th rounder to a $450k bonus, and their 4th rounder to a $1.5M bonus so far. Two more major signings should be coming as well. At least 2.
