I'd rather them wait for him to hit Free Agency in 2008. They'll have much more money to spend with A-Rod gone, Abreu gone or signed to a lesser contract, Pettitte gone, and Giambi gone

I would have to agree that we should wait till he is a free agent. I would hate to trade away the farm for a one year lease on Santana. He could walk next year when he becomes a free agent. I would hate to loose him after giving up young talent for him.

Yankees would have to part with at least Hughes, Melky, and Tabata to get him from what I've heard.
Not sure how true this is, but I heard Santana will listen to an extension if it's a 6 year deal. However, I find it highly unlikely he won't test the market. Especially since that other NY team is in a greater need of an ace.
Twins will likely keep Santana anyway since they'll overvalue him (if that's even possible).

Melky showed last season that he could hit .300 given a full season. Hughes has the potential to the sky as does Tabata, who is only like 20 years old.

This deal is not getting done if Cashman makes Hughes and Chamberlain untouchable. Yes Yankee fans, they have a lot of talent and potential. But any day Hughes could break down or Joba get in a bar fight and seriously screw up his hand/arm. The Twins are smart enough to know Duncan is a career minor leaguer and Melky isn't a starter.

The Yankees should wait until Johan becomes a free agent. It wouldn't be worth giving up Joba, Hughes, or Kennedy. They are the future of the Yankees organization.

Why can't Melky be considered a starter? He's not good. That's why. The only reason he's even starting is because Damon is shot and Matsui is fading. The Yankees should wait until Johan becomes a free agent. It wouldn't be worth giving up Joba, Hughes, or Kennedy. They are the future of the Yankees organization. He likely won't even hit the FA market. And I wouldn't be too sure the Yankees would sign him. Mets will be letting some expensive players walk and need an ace a LOT more than the Yankees.

True...The Twins rather get a player or two in exchange for Santana, than getting noone for him when he becomes a free agent. So, if thats how the Twins work it out, then it won't take the Yankees or Mets their best player under the age of 25 to get Santana. I don't mean that the Yankees or Mets will offer the Twins garbage and they'll take it, but I'm saying that they probably won't have to give the Twins their best young guns to get Santana. Unless of course, they are willing to...

They will have to give the Twins their best young players. They will have to give them 3, possibly even 4, young players for Santana.

Hank Steinbrenner spilled the beans that Cashman is meeting Bill Smith (Twins GM) about a trade for Santana. He needs to learn to zip his lip.
