Look at Pujols' stats against Lidge. That's a pretty small sample size, and it was also while Pujols was going through his ridiculous slump. The point is, if it's that important of a situation with a closer that is historically shaky mentally, I would take the best hitter in the league over Lidge. No matter what their past history is.

It's enough to go by and Pujols couldn't have been in a slump all 17 of those plate appearances.

I'm not just saying because of one big homerun. Pujols has at least one or two walkoffs that I remember off hand.
As for Pujols in his slump, it is true that he was in a slump for all of them. We were playing the Astros right around the time that Pujols reached over .300, but Lidge wasn't the closer.

So every time Pujols has faced Lidge in his career he has been in a slump?

Those were the career stats? I thought those were this season's. They were kind of hard to understand because they weren't lined up.
Anyway, I would take Pujols over Lidge in that situation. I'm not saying that this is the best match up of any batter vs. pitcher at any time, I just think that in that situation, Pujols (the definition of clutch) would beat Lidge (who is a good pitcher, but has been shaky mentally).
