Despite all of the espn garbage, despite all of the blown saves, despite all of the injuries, despite the prediction to get 100 losses, despite not getting it together in late august.
we have overachieved and for that i may change my name back to what it was before.
but lets get back on topic, did anyone really think both florida teams would put up much of a fight this year? especially florida, trading away their star player for maybin and miller(who both are a work in progress). as well as dontrelle willis who won 22 games with them a few years ago.
to make up for cabrera leaving they brought in a former all-star, Cantu, who has had a great season.
the pitching got off to a mediocre start, but with the additions of Josh Johnson and Chris Volstad it has been very good(wouldve been nice to have that pitching when the offense was scoring 10 runs a game). Our worst in the rotation was probably scott olsen who was a "do or die" pitcher, either a good start of a bad first inning.
During the trading deadline there was talk of the marlins getting manny ramirez but since it included too many prospects and boston wasnt willing to pay for most of mannys' payroll it didnt go down, instead he was traded to the dodgers.
Now, with 3 games left, they once again have a chance to take the mets down again.

I was pissed when Krivsky let Cantu go and I'm even more pissed about it now.
But ya, the Marlins had a much better year than expected. Unfortunately, they could trade a major part of their team in the offseason, as many players will be getting raises. I hope they don,t; they could definitely make the playoffs with a great rotation and a homer-hitting offense

Why were you upset when Cantu was let go? He can only play 1B and 3B.
Encarnacion: .806 OPS Votto: .857 OPS
Cantu: .815 OPS
Not much of a difference, and Encarnacion's is more OBP oriented which is better.

Because there's a good chance they overpay for a RH power bat at the corner infield comparable to Cantu, except older and more expensive. I wouldn't have said so 2 months ago, but I would put it as a decent chance that either Encarnacion or/and Votto change positions. Management seems keen on the idea of moving Edwin to first base, which would put Votto in LF.

Seems kind of silly seeing as Alonso should move pretty quickly. I thought Encarnacion was a good defensive third baseman anyways?

that's just about the first time I've heard that. He has solid range and makes spectacular plays every now and then, but his throws are often irratic and inconsistent. We've all thought he would be able to get them down by now, but he just hasn't been able to. Krivsky would have kept him at 3B, but Jocketty will move him to first if he sees a good fit; he thinks EE could play better 1B defense than Votto.
My feeling is that someone out of Votto/Encarnacion/Alonso will need to be dealt in the next 2-3 years, with EE being the odd man out(what I want and what I think will happen). If, and this is a HUGE if, we could possibly grab someone like Holliday or maybe even a Kemp, if LA is willing to trade him for some reason, I would be absolutely fine with trading him.
I'm predicting right now, though, that we sign either Bell or Crede, move EE to 1st, and Votto to left in '09

I still don't know how many were expecting us to be worse then the Nationals. Yes our opening day pitcher was freaking Mark Hendrickson, but does the names like Willingham, Jacobs, and maybe Uggla mean anything to anyone outside of Florida other then Hanley Ramirez? To me without Cabrera it was still an above average lineup since despite the bad season in 2007, they show potential, and have shown they can win like in 2006, and they were now a year more experience to improve their scary batting power. I was expecting 4th place, not making a run for the #1 draft pick for next year.

Also, do you think Stubbs will be in CF next year? I kinda like him but he seems kinda wasted in a small ball park since his defense is so awesome. Sorry for hijacking this thread by the way.

I honestly have no idea what we'll do in the outfield. Right now, unless Votto or Encarnacion are moved, we have 2 open spots. Freel, Hopper, and Hairston are still candidates for one, I guess, but I'd prefer it if they were bench players. Dickerson will have to prove that this month wasn't a fluke; I kind of think it was. I like Stubbs, but he needs at least 1-2 more months in AAA. However, since the FA and trade market is weak in the OF, I could see him starting if he has a good ST. They generally don't do that though

sorry, I have no one to talk to about the Reds. Amazingly, no one in a Chicago suburb in a Cincinnati fan, and my friends could care shit about them. It's so rare to find anyone even in Illinois that is a fan of them. One day I was in downtown Chicago and saw a guy dressed in a Bengals shirt (I had one too) and without talking we just pounded our fists as we continued walking. Kind of weird

Kind of weird the reds had a decent year as well, in a division with 3 playoff contenders.
