Him being the best in baseball is arguable.
This isn't any more of a blow to the sport than Bonds or Clemens taking steroids.

He was supposed to be leading in a new generation of clean home run hitters, by breaking the home run record cleanly, to kind of help forget about Bonds, McGwire, etc..

I never saw him as the face of a new generation. Just the guy everyone would get behind to beat Bonds' record to purify it. That's gone before it happened.
