I think they should keep going the arb route for the next three years. I think he got lucky with the arb win for $10,000,000 this year and he can't be a free agent until 2011 or 2012. As of the beginning of this year his service time was 1.145 years and he is 28 years old. He is the type of player who usually decline at age 31 - Thome, Delgado, Mo Vaughn, for example, so there is no reason to lock him up beyond that anyway. The Phils arb offer of $7M was more than generous, IMO, given that Justin Morneau, who is not a slugger like Howard, but won the same award in the AL, and plays the same position got only $4.5M. Maybe they can trade him to the an AL team for some pitching.

You can't let a guy like this get away from you. Give him his money, keep him. He sells a lot of jerseys, and helps them win ballgames. He's like their Barry Bonds, with 100% less steroids!

My vote is keep him, and then lose him to FA. >

I predict that within two weeks Howard will once more be deemed untouchable and fans will be clamoring for a long term contract for him.
