Albert Pujols has to be the 1st pick in the fantasy draft. Who wouldnt want a hitter with a .331 average 49 home runs and 137 rbi's on there fantasy team? Also a .431 obp is pretty tough to beat. Ryan Howard is not that far behind. But he doesnt have the experience and all around play to beat Albert Pujols. Other candaties for the 1st pick are Miguel Cabrera, Derek Jeter, A-Rod, Joe Mauer, Carl Crawford but all in all I think Albert Pujols should and will get picked 1st.

This will be my first year participating in a fantasy league so I'm new to this. In real baseball, pitching is your top priority, you need a guy who can get batters out, keep the score low, and eat up innings. So as the #1 pick, your choice should be none other than Johan Santana. His 06 numbers speak for themselves; 245 K's, 2.77 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 233.2 IP. Those are great numbers that you cannot pass up. And to that he is a lefty and accomplished all of this while playing in the toughest league, he is dangerous. Another great thing about him, is that 2006 is no fluke. He won a Cy Young 2 years ago and put up great numbers last year as well. The only thing he failed at this year was getting 20 wins; but Wins and Losses are little significance to a pitcher (after all, Steve Trachsel got 15). Hitters are a dime a dozen and can be gotten more easily. If you don't get Pujols, you can get Ramirez, Mauer, Morneau, etc. They are all exceptional hitters. Santana pretty much has no equal in today's game. No one. That is why he should be your #1 draft pick.

Is this really debatable? Albert Pujols missed about 3 weeks last year, yet still finished in the top 3 fantasy players for last year. Coming off of a season in which Albert Pujols critisized the MLB for giving Howard the MVP over Pujols, you can be sure he will want to make sure that doesn't happen again. Rotoauthority.com, mockdraftcentral, fantasy baseball cafe, fantasy baseball paradise, etc. all have Pujols as the number one pick by a long shot, and in a recent mock draft of experts all unanimously picked Albert Pujols as the man to have with #1. If you want specific predictions, here they are courtesy of Tim Dierkes:
Albert Pujols:
.330 average, 50 HR 133 RBI 126 R 10 SB
probably Albert's most underrated ability is his speed, especially for a first baseman. There aren't many first baseman that can steal 1 SB, and Tim Dierkes says the key to winning is to draft players that have steal potential. Certainly Albert has that potential, who in his last full season (2005) had 16 SB. Certainly Albert HAS to be the #1 pick.

The significance of Keith Foulke retiring isnt that significant. He wasnt a very good closer to begain with and has had couple of bad seasons in a row. He was old and washed up. In 2003 was his best season. In 2005 he had a 5.91 era and in 2006 he had a 4.35 those arent that great of numbers also he was 34 which is pretty old. Now he can focus on his family and do what he enjoys besides baseball, 4 years ago this would be a big deal but now its not that much of a big deal. He also made 7.5 mil which is a big chunk for a guy with a terrible era.

Santana take total control of 33 games per season. If your starting a fantasy draft, you must get pitching first. They make up 1/5 out of your rotation then the 1/8 that Pujols take in the starting lineup. Plus you got to remember Santana pitches at a AL league, so if you think his numbers are nasty in the AL, then pick him for your NL team.

Keith Foulke was never a great closer. He had a couple good seasons. He will be most remembered for his significance to the 2004 Red Sox. If you put Keith Foulke and his stats in the 70's or 80's, he would be considered good. But today, it's not possible. Closers get close to 60 saves a season. Foulke never went beyond 30. It's sad to see him go, but it's good he was able to leave this way. Better he hang up the glove before ST than have horrible outings and retire after being designated for assignment. He has a Red Sox World Series ring so I doubt he will think his career wasn't worth it.
