We need at least 12 players to start. In a 12 player game:
The game is divided into day and night phases.
During the day, the town tries to determine who the mafia is, and through majority vote, decide to lynch one person who they believe to be mafia. If they do well, they will lynch a mafia member and this will bring them closer to victory. If they choose poorly, they will lynch one of their own and the mafia will be closer to victory. The town does not know who is town and who is mafia. The mafia knows who the town is because they communicate with each other on a seperate message board.
During the night, the mafia chooses one person to kill. While the town has a disadvatage in being uninformed on who is town and who is mafia, they have an advantage in numbers, usually with a 3 to 1 ratio.
In a basic game, there are four main types of players:
Vanilla - No special powers
Cop - Chooses one person each night and is told if they are town or mafia.
Doctor - Protects one person each night and prevents them from being killed.
Roleblocker - Targets one person and prevents them from using their power.
9 players are town affiliated, and 3 players are mafia affiliated, as a rule(using the 3 to 1 ratio)
There may also be a mafia godfather, who always comes up innocent in cop investigations, even though he is mafia. In a basic game, each side only has one each of Cop, Doctor, or Roleblocker and everyone else is vanilla.
This is a game where you use logic to determine who is lying, and thus probably mafia, and who is telling the truth, and thus probably town.
