The season is obviously over so I have some ideas for next year.
1) Let every free agent except Alex Cora and Brian Schneider leave. Putz was a huge disappointment, let someone else deal with him. Delgado is too old and I don't think he'll be worth keeping post-hip surgery. Cora is a good backup. Schneider can't hit but he's good defensively and he already knows the pitchers. The catching market sucks anyway.
2) See if the Cubs would dump Derrek Lee. The Cubs have a lot of raises next year. The transition in ownership and bankruptcy is going to make money tight. Lee is making the most of the players that are attractive enough for a team to want. I would see if they'd be willing to let him go for next to nothing if the receiving team took on all of his salary. He won't put up 2006/8 Delgado numbers but he'll be productive and greatly improve the defense.
3) Offer Castillo for nothing and be willing to pay half his remaining salary. I think you can find a team that would take him for 2 years for $6M.
4) Doing this would open up 2B and I'd sign Orlando Hudson. He's good defensively, has more offensive output than Castillo, and isn't emo. I think he would become a FA even though he's said he wants to stay in LA.
5) I'd shop Mike Pelfrey. I don't think he's going to be much more than a slightly better Jon Garland. I'd target the Rangers. They have good defense and Pelfrey's groundball rate wouldn't hurt him in that ballpark.
6) I'd shop Jose Reyes. Even though it's selling low, I think this is the time to do it and there's only 2 shortstops more productive than him in all of baseball. Even though this is a stretch, I'd trade him and Daniel Murphy to the Red Sox for Ellsbury, Lowrie, and Bowden. I'd include Fernando Martinez if they threw in another pitcher. The Red Sox seem to pine over getting Hanley back. I don't think that will ever happen so Reyes is the next best thing.
The lineup would be:
LF Ellsbury
2B Hudson
3B Wright
CF Beltran
1B Lee
RF Francoeur
SS Lowrie
C Schneider/Sanots
The rotation would be:
Santana
Maine
Perez
Niese
Bowden
The bullpen would be:
Stokes
Green
Felciano
Parnell
K-Rod
The rest of the bullpen would be FAs but I would wait to see who gets what type status.
I know none of this will happen but I'm bored so I did it anyway.
