Wow...anytime you can sign someone for less than 9 million per year right after they win the AL Batting Title you've made a great signing. Mauer could have gotten so much more money, especially considering how crazy the free agent market has been this offseason. But I think part of the reason why the Twins were able to sign Mauer at such a feasible price is because last season he got paid the major league minimum, so 8+ million for 4 years right after is a great deal. The Twins made a very smart move by locking him up long-term right before his value goes up. I doubt Mauer won't have another strong season. He's very athletic and durable, so he'll be able to deal with the struggles of playing catcher. Now they can move on and try and sign some of their other star players long-term.

Well remember you can't really compare this deal to the free agent deals this offseason...Mauer still had 3 years of arbitration. Had he been a free agent he could have gotten way more.

good move for Minnesota. Unfortunately they won't be able to retain him after that deal since they are a small market club. I wonder where he'll end up afterwards.

I'm predicting he'll be a Twin because his contract isn't up until the end of 2008. After that he'll be a Yankee...because A-Rod will be off the books when he opts out...and the Yankees will have the money to bring him in.

After that he'll be a Yankee...because A-Rod will be off the books when he opts out...and the Yankees will have the money to bring him in. The Mets will no longer have Pedro, Delgado, Lo Duca, Alou, Glavine, and Green. Plus Billy's deal will almost be done. I don't see A-Rod opting out. Even though the Yankees are possibly the worst team for him, I can't see any other team going after a SS his age and poor post-season performance. He's stuck where he is and will probably retire after his tenure in pinstripes during which he will write a book about how awful his experience was with the Yankees. i wonder where johan will end up next year, im predicting omar throws 6 years, 150 mil at him... He'll have to replicate his 2006 numbers to warrant that price. Especially since the Devil isn't his agent. I think Omar will make a push for Zambrano if the Cubs don't re-sign him (don't know how they could with the contracts from this season). Then there's always C.C. Sabathia whenever he becomes a FA. He'd probably be cheaper and could put up Santana's 2006 numbers in the NL. After all, he had better numbers than D-Train and he pitched in the toughest division.

Lo Duca will be with the team 2009 latest. Then he'll be near his 40's and as much as I like him, I don't want a 40-year old catcher. We have a guy in the minors but he won't be ready until 2010 earliest. Delgado might be another year or two. No more.
Zambrano would be very good. One thing I worry about is assuming our rotation would someday be Maine, Perez (assuming he bounces back), Pelfrey, and Humber; we'll need a lefty. If we could get Zambrano, then Omar should consider trading Heilman and Pelfrey or Humber for one.

My point is we'd only have one lefty. And who knows how Perez will turn out. It'd be good to have another in the rotation.
