Trachsel had a 5 ERA until his last 2 starts in 2006. Just imagine what it'll be after playing teams like Detroit, Boston, and the Yankees.
LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - With one former New York Mets pitcher to miss the upcoming season, the Baltimore Orioles are turning to another ex-Met to plug the hole in the start rotation.
FoxSports.com reported Monday that Orioles right-hander Kris Benson will miss the 2007 season due to a partially torn rotator cuff.
Later Monday, the Baltimore Sun, citing a baseball source, reported on its web site that the Orioles have agreed in principle to a one-year deal with free agent Steve Trachsel.
According to the FoxSports.com report, Benson will require surgery to repair the injury, which surfaced after he began throwing in offseason workouts.
Benson, 32, is no stranger to injuries. He missed all of 2001 due to elbow transplant surgery and made only 18 starts two years later due to right shoulder tendinitis.
The latest injury could hurt financially for Benson, who is signed for this season at $7.5 million. The Orioles also hold a club option at $7.5 million for 2008.
Benson went 11-12 with a 4.82 ERA in 30 starts last season, his first with the Orioles.
In 168 career games with Pittsburgh, the New York Mets and Baltimore, Benson is 68-73 with a 4.34 ERA.
Trachsel was 15-8 with a 4.97 ERA for the Mets last season but two poor outings in the playoffs diminished his value on the free agent market.
The 36-year-old righthander gave up six hits and two earned runs in 3 1/3 innings in the Mets' win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game Three of the National League Division Series, and then surrendered five hits, five walks and five earned runs in one inning in New York's loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in Game Three of the NL Championship Series.
According to the Baltimore Sun report, the deal will pay Trachsel between $3 and $3.5 million, pending a physical.
Trachsel has a 134-143 career record and a 4.28 ERA in 13 big league seasons.
