Third baseman Miguel Cabrera, awaiting his arbitration hearing Friday, stayed away from all of the team's promotional activities last week, and the Marlins aren't happy about it.
''It's very disappointing,'' team president David Samson said Saturday after Cabrera failed to appear at the team's annual FanFest at Dolphin Stadium. ``[Owner Jeffrey Loria] and the rest of us are very disappointed that he's not here with every one of his teammates. All the players are here except Miguel.
``We have tried to contact him and we were told he couldn't be here for personal reasons or whatever the case was. Hopefully, when we see him, he will explain to us and the fans why he wasn't.''
Samson was given no reason to believe that Cabrera's absence is related to this week's arbitration hearing in Phoenix. ''Miguel's an adult,'' Samson said. ``He knows it's a business.''
All the major-league Marlins under contract were expected to attend Saturday's FanFest, unless there were extenuating circumstances. Samson said Cabrera signed a contract Dec. 12, but the amount won't be determined until Friday's hearing.
Cabrera, who is eligible for arbitration for the first time, has asked for $7.4 million this season. The Marlins have offered $6.7 million. Cabrera won't be eligible for free agency until after 2009.
In a town hall meeting with fans Saturday, general manager Larry Beinfest was asked about the Marlins' financial approach with Cabrera. ''We're being fair,'' Beinfest said. ``It's a lot of money either way. There's no ill feelings on our end. The player has his rights.''
• The Marlins' only other arbitration case will be heard Monday, with reliever Kevin Gregg asking for $700,000 and the Marlins offering $575,000.
PITCHING UPDATE
Right-hander Anibal Sanchez, who felt discomfort in his throwing shoulder last month, threw off a mound in Jupiter recently and reported no problems, Beinfest said.
Right-hander Josh Johnson will try to throw Monday, three weeks after he felt ''sharp pain'' above his right elbow. Results from an MRI were negative, so Johnson indicated he's not concerned.
''We want to be cautious,'' Beinfest said, adding the Marlins are hopeful Johnson will be ready for the start of the season April 2.
• Left-hander Dontrelle Willis told fans at a town hall meeting, ``Most definitely get your playoff tickets because we're going. . . . I hope [other teams] think we're not better so we can bust them in the mouth in this heat.''
• Willis, who finished 12-12 with a 3.87 ERA last season after a 1-6 start, said he plans to build on his second half. ''To start out with a touchdown for an ERA and be able to have a positive season, I was more impressed with that than any other season I've had in my life,'' said Willis, who went 22-10 in 2005.
• On the first day individual game tickets were available, the Marlins said they sold more than 23,000 tickets, compared with 13,000 last season and 25,000 in 2005. About 15,000 people attended Saturday.
• In a town hall meeting, Samson said ''it looks like there's a good chance'' the Marlins will get state money toward a ballpark and said he wasn't sure if the team would change its name to the Miami Marlins if the downtown stadium materializes.
• When a fan asked if the Marlins would spend the money they get from revenue sharing, Samson said yes and cracked, ''Thank you, Mr. Fehr, for asking'' -- a reference to union chief Donald Fehr.
