The Royals are looking suprisingly good this year. They signed a new ace and closer (Gil Meche and Octovio Dotel) as well as signing a good back up catcher for Buck and some good pitching in Bannister, Bale, and Riske. IF Alex Gordon comes in, plays 3B, moving Teahan to OF, and plays a good season, the Royals would be in good shape. Mike Sweeney is on the last year of his contract, so they'd have another 10M to work with, and they would also have even more money since they would generate much more revenue if their team starts doing good. What do you guys think about this subject?

They have no chance to do well. They are in the toughest division in baseball.

No chance?
Depends on what you perceive as "well". 70 wins would be doing "well", especially as a stepping stone to 2008.
Anyways, honestly, I think anywhere between 70 and 85 wins is possible, as crazy as it may sound. The signings and trades alone (and release, see Runelvys Hernandez) put them up to 70, so let's put that at the minimum. Why so high? Well...let's do some ifs...realistic ones. What if...Gil Meche improves on breakout performance from a year ago? What if Zack Greinke returns to the big leagues and performs as he did as a rookie (3.90 ERA)? What if Odalis Perez returns to the all star he was before 2006.
But lets look at the more sure things right now. Full season's from breakout performer Mark Teahen and trade acquisition Ryan Shealy will bolster the offense. The way I see it, Angel Berroa can't get any worse than he was last year. There is finally some more reliable bullpen arms...David Riske, Octavio Dotel, and Jimmy Gobble. The pitching depth in AAA is much, much better in Zach Day, former #3 overall pick Dewon Brazelton, young groundball specialist Billy Buckner, and young lefty Tyler Lumsden.
Natsgm, you are absolutely right about Sweeney's contract. Reggie Sanders and Scott Elarton are 2 more bad contracts coming off the books...that's a total of 20 million bucks. If Berroa falters yet again...don't be surprised to see Dayton Moore take a stab at Alex Rodriguez if hits the market. More than likely though, the money will be conserved to lock up Mark Teahen and Zack Greinke to long term deals.
I don't know what will happen..but I do know they will improve.
And please...if your going to participate in this discussion...don't be ignorant.

And please...if your going to participate in this discussion...don't be ignorant. I'm not ignorant. I don't care how good you think they are, they still lack the quality players to get them even 70 wins. Look at their division; The Twins came back from something like 12 games at the end of the year, the Tigers were in first until the last game of the season, and the White Sox won 90 and still didnt make it to the playoffs. Add to that the Indians who have rebuilt a bullpen to match the quality of their starters and lineup. They are playing in a tough league in a division where 4 teams have a chance at the division title. They will probably improve, but its not very difficult to improve after a 62-100 season.

Even if the Royals win say 75 games, that is a good sign that they are moving in the right direction, hopefully translating into more fan base equalling more money!

I was just thinking this over, and y would our Royals go after A-Rod with 3B and DH locked up for many years to come (Gordon and Butler) shortstop maybe?

i don't really think its smart to take a stab at A-Rod, but rather pay another good SS 11M or something like that

I meant put A-Rod back at Shortstop. He wouldn't be the greatest defender (albeit better than Angel Berroa), but he would again be the best SS in the league IMO. In a low pressure environment like KC, he could thrive.
I think there would only be like a 10% chance he comes to KC...but maybe. I think the money will be used to lock up Teahen/Greinke to long term deals...and later Gordon/Butler.

No way A-Rod will come to the Royals, he'll quickly file to be retraded away once that happen.

Maybe he will...A-Rod is quite the character. If they show signs of promise in 2007...he could very well come to KC. I mean sign him as a FA anyways, if he opts out.

I think the Royals have improved alot. They have much better pitching and some young guys ready to step it up.
But that being said, there are still alot of question marks to be answered. Meche could do very well, or he could totally flop. Greinke could have an amazing season, or could be sent down. There are alot of young guys who potentially tank, but could also make the team great.
When a team has that many question marks, I can't see them doing very well in that division. They will improve, but I can't see them beating anyone out in that division, unless the Indians choke.

Royals next season division place: 4th place
But I don't see A-Rod having motivation to play hard for a team like KC. After reaching the playoff with the Yankees since he first play with the team, I can see thinking "Why am I playing here" while he is guarding 3rd base line.

A-Rod will not be a Royal. He'll be a Yankee.

They have no chance to do well. They are in the toughest division in baseball. Which is ironic considering 3-4 years ago it was considered the worst
