JUPITER ยท A year after the Marlins became the first team with four rookie 10-game winners, Scott Olsen set the bar a little higher: 16 wins.
For the four second-year guys?
"Four? Come on now," said Olsen before Sunday's first official workout for pitchers and catchers. "I'm talking about all five [starters]."
That would give the Marlins 80 wins from their rotation, or two more than the whole staff managed last season. Marlins starters went 62-56 last year, tying for the ninth-most wins among major league rotations.
The American League champion Tigers led baseball with a 75-47 output from their starters. The Mets led the National League at 65-50.
Told of Olsen's prediction, staff ace Dontrelle Willis smiled.
"The sky's the limit," he said. "I tell everybody I'm the worst one out of the group. They're farther along than I was at that point. I watch bullpens every day and I see them do things I'm not even trying to begin to do in my fifth season."
WELCOME ADDITION
Willis said he'd welcome Miguel Cabrera into his tax bracket, but the left-hander doesn't anticipate him remaining there long. Cabrera beat the Marlins in arbitration Saturday to secure a $7.4 million salary, $950,000 more than Willis is making.
"He's one of the top three best players in the game," Willis said. "I think he's worth $300 million. I've seen him since A-ball and I've seen him do amazing things. He's definitely deserving of anything and everything that comes to him."
OUT OF OPTIONS
Most teams generally have some difficult roster decisions every spring on guys who are out of minor league options. A player who is out of options must clear waivers before he can be reassigned to the minors.
The Marlins have five players in that category, but all are expected to make the club. They are: Josh Willingham, Cody Ross, Joe Borchard, Sergio Mitre and Renyel Pinto.
