RED SOX 3, ORIOLES 2 at Fort Myers, Fla. Friday, March 23 Red Sox at the plate: Jason Varitek crushed a solo homer to center against Orioles ace Erik Bedard. It was Varitek's first homer of the spring, snapping an 0-for-17 drought. J.D. Drew was robbed of a home run by Orioles let fielder Freddie Bynum.
Orioles at the plate: Jay Gibbons and Kevin Millar stroked RBI doubles against Curt Schilling in the top of the fourth.
Red Sox on the mound: Schilling was strong in his most extended start of the spring. Over seven innings, Schilling scattered six hits and two runs while striking out six. He didn't walk anyone. Craig Hansen pitched a scoreless eighth.
Orioles on the mound: Bedard turned in a solid outing, holding the Sox to just one hit and one run over five innings while striking out eight. Closer Chris Ray walked two batters in his inning, but didn't allow a run.
Grapefruit League records: Red Sox 11-10-2; Orioles 11-10-2.
Up next: The Orioles will play a pair of split-sqaud games Saturday -- one at home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., against the Dodgers at 1:05 p.m. ET, and one in Port St. Lucie, Fla., against the Mets at 1:10 p.m. ET. Daniel Cabrera will get the ball in the home game, and Hayden Penn will start against the Mets.
