PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Duaner Sanchez returned and resumed working out with the Mets yesterday. He also kept his word and apologized to his teammates for the repeated lateness that prompted his dismissal from camp Thursday.
"I think he owes every one of us an apology," closer Billy Wagner said even after Sanchez apologized to him personally. Indications are Sanchez went around the room and tried to do that.
"A group of guys talked to him," Jose Valentin said. "We let him know that we were really counting on him."
Valentin and Wagner, among others, were outspoken Friday in their criticism of Sanchez, who is expected to start the season on the disabled list. While all may be forgiven, Wagner said Sanchez still has a lot to prove before all is forgotten.
"I love him as a person," Wagner said. "I know he's sincere. I know he's got a good heart. But saying you're sorry is one thing. Now you've got to show it."
Manager Willie Randolph, who kicked Sanchez out of camp Thursday, said: "We're back to normalcy. There's no reason not to be. That's over and done with. He's part of our family."
