For Boston it's Varitek. I read if Willie he's forced to pick a captain for the Mets, it'll be Glavine. Other than those teams, most don't have official captains since it's dumb.

It's not really dumb. The "C" represents the team leader...if a player has a long standing with a team, it's a sign of respect from the ball club. It may not be widely accepted, but it's certainly not "dumb".
Konerko is for ChiSox
Sweeney is for Royals

The Cardinals have leaders, but not captains.
The MV3 as Cardinal fans call them (Pujols, Rolen, and Edmonds) are the leaders for the position players.
Carpenter is the leader of the rotation.
Isringhausen is the leader of the bullpen.
The idea of a captain is stupid though. It should be the catcher no matter what. How is Derek Jeter going to help out the pitching staff?
The catcher can talk with all of the position players and the pitchers.

Konerko is for ChiSox Sweeney is for Royals It is dumb because they usually only give the title Captain to the popular player even if they are the least deserving. I agree with Cards fan. The captain should always be the catcher because he is the commonality between the everyday, position players and pitchers. |
