Would it be all that bad if they gave him a start early on when games don't matter as much? Since when do games early on not matter? If not for the games early in the season, the Cardinals would not have made it into the playoffs. Opening day and the last day of the season have the same value. A win or a loss against a teams record.

No they don't. If you lose opening day, you have 161 chances to make up for it. If you lose the last day of the season which knocks you out of the playoffs, you can't make up for it.

But if you have a bad start, then your team is going have to work twice as hard to make the playoff. :/

It seems like every year the Yankees start out awful and then come back by the half-way point. Imagine how many wins they would amass if they played consistent the whole season front to end.

It sting to see that your team doesn't make the playoff by 1 or 2 wins behind and then you look back to April and wonder what would had happen if your team didn't start off bad.
