Griffey connects on homer No. 574 Slugger moves into eighth place all-time By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com
CINCINNATI -- Reds right fielder Ken Griffey Jr. took over sole possession of eighth place on the all-time home run leader board when he hit homer No. 574 Friday night vs. the Pirates. In the sixth inning with Cincinnati trailing by a 2-0 score, Griffey pulled a 1-1 pitch from lefty Paul Maholm into the right-field bullpen at Great American Ball Park. It was Griffey's 11th homer of the season, all of them coming in his last 34 games.
It moved the 37-year-old Griffey past Harmon Killebrew on the all-time list. Next on the list is seventh-place slugger Mark McGwire, who hit 583 career home runs.
Maholm is the 366th different pitcher that Griffey has homered against during his 19-year career. The next batter, Brandon Phillips, followed with a home run that tied the game.
