The thing that every Reds fan wanted in the offseason has happened- the Reds, or owner Bob Castellini have opened their wallet up. Castellini promised fans that he would do this in order to build a winning team. Apparently, he now feels like the Reds are close to contending in the weak NL Central. We know this because the payroll is going to increase by a large amount after the Cordero signing is completed.
The Reds had three major needs at the beginning of the offseason- 1. Get a good manager 2. Improve rotation 3 Improve bullpen. The Reds have accomplished two of the three goals, starting out by signing Dusty Baker to a large contract. This showed me that the Reds were finally ready to spend some money. The Cordero signing, which will come shortly, took how much money I thought they spend to a whole other level. When I saw the free agent list, I said to myself that it would be impossible to sign Cordero. But, they showed that they are not afraid to get what they need for the team. They had a glaring need in the bullpen, and got the best player available. Even when Cordero was incredibly expensive, especially for a closer, they went after him, and got him. They sent a message to the other teams that they will be major players in the free agent market from now on. No longer will they just sign players that other teams pass on. Now, they will be joining the races for the elite players that fit their needs, and will not hesitate to spend.
The last need to get in this offseason is the starting rotation. It will be very interesting to see if the Reds are willing to sign out even more money in order to sign a starting pitcher or acquire one will an expensive contract. We'll see how much money they really are willing to spend.
Other forms of seeing how much money they are willing to spend will be putting together a contract extension with star Brandon Phillips, the centerpiece of Cincinnati. Also, they could sign Adam Dunn to a new contract.
Bottom line is that Reds fans can not complain after the offseason so far. Every single year we have always cried about how they weren't willing to do what it took to build a winning club. This can not be said anymore.
