Tigers at the plate: Chris Shelton went 3-for-4, including a solo home run off starter John Patterson. Timo Perez had two hits and two RBIs in the game.
Nationals at the plate: They scored two runs in the second inning, six runs four innings later and two more in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Zimmerman highlighted the scoring with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Nook Logan and Kory Casto had two hits and two RBIs in the game.
Tigers on the mound: Left-hander Nate Robertson lasted five innings and gave five runs on four hits. Fernando Rodney and Jose Mesa combined to give up five runs in two innings.
Nationals on the mound: Patterson lasted four innings and gave up a run on four hits. Joel Hanrahan gave up three runs -- two earned -- in 2 1/3 innings.
Grapefruit League records: Tigers 15-9-1; Nationals 10-11-1.
Up next: The Tigers have split-squad games against the Astros and Braves on Saturday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. ET. The Tigers travel to Kissimmee, Fla., to play the Astros. Detroit right-hander Zach Miner will face Houston right-hander Jason Jennings. In Lakeland, Fla., Detroit left-hander Kenny Rogers will take the mound against Atlanta right-hander Tim Hudson.
