Guillen injures shin, leaves game
Shortstop listed as day to day after fouling ball off right leg

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Carlos Guillen left the Tigers' split-squad game against the Braves on Saturday after fouling a ball off of his right shin.
Guillen was batting in the bottom of the third inning when he fouled off an 0-1 pitch from Atlanta starter Tim Hudson. The ball hit him midway up the lower part of his leg, somehow missing the large shin guard he wears. It was the same spot, Guillen said, where he fouled off another Hudson pitch when they faced each other last Sunday at Disney.
Guillen backed out of the batter's box and knelt to the ground. After being examined by head athletic trainer Kevin Rand, Guillen limped off the field under his own power. He's listed as day to day with a right shin contusion. Minor Leaguer Mark Haske replaced him in the game.
Guillen was the best hitter in the Tigers lineup last year. The 31-year-old batted .320 with career bests of 100 runs scored and 20 stolen bases to go with 19 home runs and 85 RBIs. He was named the Tiger of the Year by the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Guillen has battled injuries throughout much of his career, but most of his problems have involved his knees. Guillen has remained healthy this spring. He entered Saturday batting .214 (9-for-42) in 16 games with three doubles, a home run and 10 RBIs, tied for the team lead.
Guillen was one of two Tigers to leave the game. Catcher Vance Wilson left earlier with right shoulder inflammation.
