Tigers slugger Gary Sheffield was suspended three games by the commissioner's office on Friday after home plate umpire Greg Gibson accused Sheffield of throwing a bat stub in his direction during Cleveland's 11-5 victory over Detroit on Thursday.
It is believed Sheffield will appeal the decision. He referred to the umpire as a "liar," according to a source.
The incident occurred after a broken-bat groundout in the fifth inning. Earlier in the at-bat, Sheffield argued a called strike with the umpire. Sheffield was ejected for the bat toss.
