NEW YORK -- Win No. 12 last year came for the Marlins on May 22.
On the final day of April this season, Florida equaled that total on a night the Marlins evened their record on a six-game road trip.
Boosted by a five-run third inning, Scott Olsen was given an early advantage that he didn't surrender, and the Marlins claimed a 9-6 win over the Mets on Monday night in front of 39,383 at Shea Stadium.
The 2006 Marlins got off to an 11-31 start, before they turned their season around. After topping the Mets on Monday, Florida is 12-13, and 2-2 on its trip to Philadelphia and New York.
Olsen gave up four runs (two earned) in six-plus innings, improving to 3-1. Hanley Ramirez and Alfredo Amezaga each homered in the fourth frame.
The Marlins got to Chan Ho Park early, and then held off a Mets surge.
Brought in as an emergency starter when Orlando Hernandez went on the disabled list with a shoulder injury, Park retired the first eight Marlins before his night unraveled.
Park hit a wild streak in the third inning after Olsen's two-out single to center. He walked Ramirez and Dan Uggla on eight straight balls, before Miguel Cabrera's two-run single opened a five-run third inning. Second baseman Damion Easley made a leaping attempt on Cabrera's liner, and the ball popped out of his glove. The Mets defense also didn't help Park out on Mike Jacobs' RBI to center, which fell between three players. Josh Willingham's two-run flare single to right capped the inning.
Olsen now has a four-game hitting streak, becoming the fourth Marlins' pitcher with at least a four-game streak. Dontrelle Willis hit safely in six straight (May 23-June 23, 2005), while Jack Armstrong hit in five in a row (July 22-Aug. 12, 1993) and Julian Tavarez logged a four-game streak (Aug. 2-24, 2002).
Home runs by Amezaga and Ramirez in the fourth inning made it 7-0.
Olsen, who worked out runners in scoring position in the first and third innings, issued a two-out home run to Carlos Beltran in the fifth inning, his sixth of the year.
In the sixth inning, the Marlins tacked on an unearned run when Olsen's sacrifice bunt resulted in a throwing error by catcher Paul Lo Duca. Miguel Olivo, who singled, scored from second.
The Mets put up three runs in the sixth, with two unearned, to narrow the gap to 8-4. David Wright opened the inning by reaching on Cabrera's error at third. Moises Alou doubled, and Shawn Green slapped a two-run single. Jose Reyes added an RBI double.
In the seventh inning, the Mets threatened when Olsen issued consecutive singles to Beltran and Carlos Delgado. With no outs, Randy Messenger entered in relief and worked out of the jam by striking out Wright before getting Alou to tap into a 5-4-3 double play.
Pinch-hitter Jason Wood padded the lead to five runs with an RBI double in the eighth.
The Marlins finished April with 101 extra-base hits, the most of any team in the league for the month since the 2004 Cardinals had 104.
