MIAMI (TICKER) -- With All-Star Miguel Cabrera gone, the Florida Marlins are searching for a third baseman.
In an attempt to perhaps fill that hole, on Friday the Marlins signed veteran infielder Jorge Cantu to a minor-league contract.
Florida traded Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to the Detroit Tigers on December 5 for lefthander Andrew Miller, outfielder Cameron Maybin, catcher Mike Rabelo and three other prospects.
The Marlins hope Cantu can help fill the void Cabrera left at third base. The 26-year-old hit .252 with one home run in 52 games with the Cincinnati Reds and Tampa Bay Rays last season.
A five-year veteran, Cantu's best season came in 2005 when he hit .286 with 28 home runs and 117 RBI for Tampa Bay.
Cantu is a .273 career hitter with 45 home runs and 209 RBI in 359 games with Tampa Bay and Cincinnati.
Florida also signed infielders Chris Barnwell, Tagg Bozied, Rex Rundgren and Jason Wood to minor-league contracts.
In addition, the Marlins signed outfielders John Gall, Alexis Gomez, Jorge Piedra, catcher Paul Hoover, pitchers Tim Corcoran, Marcus Gwyn, Bobby Keppel, Joe Nelson and Doug Waechter.
