PRESS RELEASE
HOUSTON -- The Astros announced today that Sharon Robinson, daughter of legendary baseball hero and American icon Jackie Robinson, is scheduled to make stops in Houston as a part of her father's commemorative tour around ballparks in the major leagues. Robinson is Major League Baseball's educational programming consultant and has dedicated her life to carrying on her father's legacy of helping others.
Robinson will start the day with a visit to Jones High School and will speak to their baseball team from 1:00-2:30 pm along with Enos Cabell, Astros special assistant to the general manager. Robinson and Cabell will be joined by Houston ISD Athletic Director Daryle Wade in an effort to bring African-American players and fans back into the game of baseball.
After the school visit, Robinson will return to Minute Maid Park for a meet and greet with the Houston Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities boys and girls teams from 4:00 p.m.-5:15 p.m. in the Depot which is located on the second floor in Union Station. Robinson will speak on encouraging interest in baseball with inner-city youth as a part of the Astros RBI program.
Robinson will participate in a pre-game ceremony along with 42 Houston RBI program participants, and will throw out the first pitch with former Astro J.R. Richard. During the third inning, Robinson will join Astros Hall of Fame Broadcaster Milo Hamilton for an on-air interview.
April 15 marks the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's Major League debut. The Astros will celebrate Robinson's legacy at Minute Maid Park as a part of a league wide effort to recognize Robinson's impact on the game. Now in its fourth year, the league-wide Jackie Robinson Day was recognized at each of the 14 games played throughout the Major Leagues last Sunday.
