Oswalt absent due to personal matters Ace right-hander pitched on short rest Tuesday By Alyson Footer / MLB.com
CINCINNATI -- Right-hander Roy Oswalt did not accompany the team to Cincinnati Tuesday night and will not be present for the two-game series with the Reds at Great American Ball Park. Oswalt went home to Mississippi to tend to personal matters and will rejoin the club Friday in Milwaukee. Club officials did not disclose further reasons why Oswalt did not travel to Cincinnati.
Oswalt's absence likely further explains why he started Tuesday's game against the Marlins on short rest, after throwing 120 pitches in Philadelphia last Saturday. Oswalt was originally scheduled to start the series opener with the Reds Wednesday.
When the club announced Oswalt would instead pitch on three days' rest, manager Phil Garner said Oswalt volunteered to do so in order to give Chris Sampson an extra day of rest to tend to his ailing left calf.
