Left-handed relievers usually draw quite a bit of interest, and Ron Mahay was no different.
The veteran chose the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, according to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney, after the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees made inquiries. Mahay, 36, agreed to terms on a two-year, $8 million deal. He compiled a 2.55 ERA while pitching in 58 games for the Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves last season. Atlanta acquired him on July 31 with first baseman Mark Teixeira.
Citing a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hadn't made an announcement, The Associated Press reported that Mahay's deal is subject to him passing a physical, which is scheduled for Thursday.
The Braves offered salary arbitration to Mahay in November.
Mahay has pitched for six teams in 11 seasons, going 19-10 with a 3.87 ERA.
He would become the third lefty in Kansas City's bullpen, joining John Bale and Jimmy Gobble.
Kansas City, coming off a 69-93 record and a last-place finish in the AL Central, agreed to a $36 million, three-year contract with free-agent outfielder Jose Guillen this offseason.
