Escobar departs with strained back Angels starter leaves in third, to be re-evaluated Sunday By Lyle Spencer / MLB.com
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Angels starter Kelvim Escobar left Saturday's game at Tempe Diablo Stadium against Colorado in the third inning with a strain in the lower left side of his back. The extent of the injury was not immediately known. Escobar will be re-evaluated Sunday, the club announced.
Escobar is scheduled to pitch the second game of the season April 3 at Anaheim against Texas.
Escobar, 30, had thrown a pitch to Kaz Matsui that the Rockies second baseman stroked past the mound to the right of second baseman Erick Aybar, whose throw to first was too late after a spectacular stab.
Escobar was off the mound, showing discomfort, and that brought out manager Mike Scioscia and the Angels' training staff. After throwing a warmup pitch, Escobar left the mound for what the club called precautionary reasons.
Escobar, who gave up one earned run and three hits in 2 2/3 innings, was making his fourth start of the spring. He's given up four earned runs in 11 innings for a 3.27 ERA.
Escobar was 11-14 last year with a 3.61 ERA in 30 starts. He's 83-83 in his 10-year career with a 4.26 ERA in 380 appearances, 171 as a starter.
