Pirates at the plate: Catcher Ronny Paulino drove in his team-high-tying 11th RBI with a fifth-inning single, and finished 2-for-3 at the plate. His replacement, Humberto Cota, doubled to knock in two runs in the bottom of the seventh to join Paulino with 11 RBIs.
Yankees at the plate: Hideki Matsui had an RBI single in the fourth, while Bronson Sardinha had a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to bring New York within one run. The Yankees had two men on base in the ninth but were unable to push the tying run across the plate.
Pirates on the mound: Starter Shawn Chacon allowed his former team just one hit -- a single to Miguel Cairo in the third -- and racked up four strikeouts during his three scoreless innings.
Yankees on the mound: Starter Darrell Rasner scattered seven hits but allowed just one unearned run while fanning five. Colter Bean took the loss after allowing two runs in a three-hit seventh inning.
Grapefruit League records: Pirates 9-14-1; Yankees 12-9-1.
Up next: The Pirates will go to Fort Myers to face the Twins on Saturday in a 1:05 p.m. ET contest. Right-hander Ian Snell will start for the Pirates against Minnesota righty Carlos Silva.
The Yankees return home to face Toronto at 1:15 p.m. ET. On Saturday. Mike Mussina will get the ball for New York, and he'll face righty Victor Zambrano.
