I don't think he'll be able to hold it. He has a career 5.08 ERA, and he had a 4.46 ERA last season. Sure, he even improved this Spring Training with a 3.65 ERA--but Prior will probably take the spot when he comes back. With Peavy, Young, Maddux and Wolf ahead of him, it seems like his only shot is to hang on to the #5 spot. Mark Prior is just too talented to hold him back from the rotation when he's healthy...but hey, he'll probably get injured again--so even after that Germano could come back to the rotation.

While he's healthy? Very good. In his career, he's 42-29 with a 3.51 ERA and 757 K's in just 657 IP.

I love a young pitcher who can work magic with the changeup... it takes guts, it takes knowledge and control... and Germano looked great for quite a while... until batters figured out what to lay off of, forcing Justin to come in with a middling fastball in hitters' counts. Germano seems smart for a young pitcher. Let's see what adjustments he makes.

He's definitely better than a lot of #5 starters, but I'm just saying Prior is better and will take his place when he gets healthy. Nothing really against Germano...he has a lot of potential.
As you said, he started off great then slowed down as hitters started figuring him out...now all he has to do is adjust and get back on his game.

True...the Padres really aren't desperate for a 5th starter, unlike a lot of teams. Estes would be an above average 5th starter, but I still think he wont get the job. Whoever the Padres pick as their 5th starter, they should be comfortable with him.

Sure. If you can have a shutdown guy like Prior as a #5, you're doing well. I'd love to see him match up against other teams' #5 guys.
