During the Padres' final season at Qualcomm, I met Mr. Randy Jones outside his self-named BBQ joint. A jovial guy was he. It was a pleasure. And he was eager to autograph this old card from my collection: Notice that he's listed as "Washington" and "Nat'l League" (rather than Padres). That was from the year before Ray Kroc took over the team (sometime in the early 1970s, forget the exact year)... they almost moved to Washington to resurrect the Senators name. As a native San Diegan (now in Spokane, WA), I'm sure glad they stuck around. I told Randy that the team could probably still use him as a lefty in the pen... he got a kick out of that. I also met T. Gwynn at a San Diego car dealership. He was signing autos (for FREE, at least to the fans)... he signed a copy of his book on hitting for me. There were so many people waiting, we only spoke briefly, but I asked him if his had was about to fall off yet... he gave me that good Santa Claus-style laugh Tony was known for. Share your Padres autograph memories (or even non-Padres). Good and the bad. There's almost always a good story to go with these moments.
