Even more excited about Roger Clemens return to the Bronx Bombers than Yankees fans were the big wigs at ESPN, who announced they will drop all N.L. Central coverage to devote even more time to the A.L. East.
"We're all very pleased the Rocket is returning to New York," said ESPN commentator Steve Phillips during an impromptu office party. "Baseball outside the Northeast doesn't matter and now with Roger coming back to the Yankees, I may never mention any of those other 28 teams on-air again, especially the ones in the Midwest."
Phillips' sentiments were not lost on ESPN's top brass, who plan to drop all coverage of the N.L. Central now that Clemens will not be on the Houston Astros this season.
"It was an easy decision to make," said ESPN President George Bodenheimer of the move. "All four of the reporters we send to cover games in the N.L. Central dreaded having to travel to places like Houston to cover Clemens' career after he left New York. Now there's no need to offer any coverage of the N.L. Central anymore. We're also planning to phase-out N.L. West coverage once Barry Bonds either retires or hopefully joins the Red Sox one day."
