Cardinals claim RHP Todd Wellemeyer from Royals
May 15, 2007
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The St. Louis Cardinals claimed reliever Todd Wellemeyer off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday, and plan to add him to their roster this weekend.
Wellemeyer, a 28-year-old right-hander, was 0-1 with a 10.34 ERA in 12 games for the Royals this season, allowing 25 hits in 15 2-3 innings. He has a career record of 6-8 with a 5.65 ERA.
"We've always liked his arm. We've always thought he was someone we'd be interested in acquiring," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said before Tuesday night's game at Los Angeles. "We'll just put him out there, break him in, see what we've got."
The Cardinals have an opening in their bullpen because right-hander Brad Thompson has moved into the starting rotation.
"He's pitched well twice," La Russa said of Thompson, who allowed three runs in a career-high 6 2-3 innings in an 8-4 victory over the Dodgers on Monday night.
