RED SOX 1, DEVIL RAYS 1 in 10 innings
at St. Petersburg
Saturday, March 24
Red Sox at the plate: Manny Ramirez's run-scoring double off Rays reliever Chad Orvella in the fifth inning scored Coco Crisp for Boston's lone run of the game. Non-roster invitee Joe McEwing turned a single into a double in the seventh off Rays right-hander Ruddy Lugo.
Rays at the plate: Raul Casanova hit an RBI single in the ninth inning to tie the game at 1. Elijah Dukes beat out an infield single off Hideki Okajima in the fourth inning for the club's first hit of the day. Utility infielder Brendan Harris, who is hoping to earn a roster spot, had a hustling double in the sixth. A day after hitting a three-run homer against the Reds, Jonny Gomes hit his fourth double of the spring off Boston submariner Javier Lopez.
Red Sox on the mound: Right-hander Devern Hansack started and pitched three perfect innings, striking out three batters. Earlier in the spring, Hansack was competing for the closing job, but he is now likely ticketed to start the year at Triple-A Pawtucket.
Rays on the mound: Edwin Jackson did nothing to hurt his chances of becoming the team's No. 5 starter. The right-hander pitched out of a couple of jams before leaving the game with two outs in the fifth. Jackson gave up one run on five hits, walking two and striking out six. Jackson escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third when Dustan Mohr made a diving catch in left field of Mike Lowell's sinking line drive.
Grapefruit League records: Red Sox 11-10; Rays 7-16.
Up next: The Rays will travel to Bradenton, Fla., on Sunday for a 1:05 p.m. ET contest against the Pirates at McKechnie Field. Right-hander Jae Seo will start for the Rays and will be followed by right-handers Brian Stokes and Seth McClung. Left-hander Tom Gorzelanny will start for the Pirates.
The Red Sox will host the Marlins in Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday in a 1:05 p.m. contest. Right-hander Josh Beckett will start for Boston against his former team, while Yusmeiro Petit will start for Florida.
