DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Casey Janssen is out for the season with a torn labrum in his right shoulder, a massive blow to the team's pitching staff.
Janssen had tossed just a few pitches in the bullpen at the minor league complex prior to throwing in a simulated game Tuesday, when he shut it down. He was sent for an MRI that revealed the damage.
"He's lost for the year," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said Wednesday. "The good news is he should be totally fine, bounce back and in four months he will be throwing.
"Obviously I don't think it will be enough to help us this season but we will have him back healthy next year."
Janssen believes he will have the surgery next week with Dr. Lewis Yocum performing the procedure.
He was slated to move out of the bullpen into the starting rotation this season, competing for the fifth spot with Jesse Litsch.
Either way, he was going to be a key cog for the club.
Janssen doesn't know when he was hurt.
"You don't know, but you know something is wrong," he said. "It'll be tough to handle especially after working hard and this team is going to be really good and I wanted to be a part of it."
Janssen went 2-3 with a 2.35 ERA in 70 games last season as the set-up man for Jeremy Accardo, who took over as closer after B.J. Ryan was injured.
