TORONTO -- Toronto Blue Jays closer B.J. Ryan will make one more appearance for single-A Dunedin on Wednesday before moving up to triple-A Syracuse to continue his rehabilitation assignment.
Ryan, working his way back from Tommy John surgery on his left elbow last May, is expected to make his first outing for the SkyChiefs on Friday. Once there, the plan is for him to make four appearances before he gets re-evaluated.
"He's coming, he's getting there," said general manager J.P. Ricciardi. "We'll just see how he's pitching, how he's getting people out and how he feels. I think it's a combination of all that."
Ryan threw a scoreless inning Monday for Dunedin against Fort Myers in his second appearance with the team. The Blue Jays want to test him against some tougher competition before bringing him back up.
"Right now, he just needs to pitch," said Ricciardi. "He's still not a year removed. We're getting closer to that, he'll be here sooner than later."
Third baseman Scott Rolen, meanwhile, had the pin removed from his broken right middle finger Monday. He'll start hitting off a tee this weekend and join the team in Baltimore next Monday, where he'll be examined again.
If all goes well, he'll start taking grounders and throwing the ball with the team and take batting practice around when Texas visits April 16. At that point an assessment will be made if he needs a rehab assignment.
"I talked to him, he feels fine," said Jays manager John Gibbons. "They cleared him to start doing some things."
