TORONTO -- Seeking another left-hander for the bullpen, the Toronto Blue Jays called up Jesse Carlson from triple-A Syracuse after Wednesday's 6-3 loss to Oakland and designated right-hander Randy Wells for assignment.
Wells is a Rule 5 pick from the Cubs and the Blue Jays must negotiate a deal with Chicago to keep him or offer him back to them. He also must clear waivers before the Blue Jays can assign him.
Wells made one appearance, throwing a scoreless inning.
Carlson hasn't allowed a run in 3 2-3 innings over two games for the SkyChiefs.
"Jesse almost made the team out of spring training and we're facing a lot of lefties, we're a little beat up now," said manager John Gibbons. "We weren't finding a whole lot of time for Wellsie either, hopefully he gets through or we work a deal and we keep him."
