The Phils got a good game from Jayson Werth and a home run from Eric Bruntlett, subbing at shortstop for the ailing Jimmy Rollins, but it wasn't enough as the Cubs made a good play and a great play and the Phils failed to turn a double play. The Cubs' cause was aided by a blown call on a ball which passed the left field foul pole on the left but but called a home run. The Phillies had come back to take the lead at 5-4 after 7 but the Cubs tied it in the eighth and took the lead in the 10th on Utley's throwing error trying to make the relay on a ball hit to short by pinch hitter, pitcher Carlos Zambrano. In the bottom of the 9th, with the game tied at 5, Kerry Wood threw to 2nd on a bunt, seemingly making a bad decision, but the force was made keeping the winning run at 1st. The Phils managed to get a runner at 2nd with two outs on a HBP to Greg Dobbs, but Carlos Ruiz scalded a ball which was by Derrek Lee, who somehow snagged it and beat Ruiz to the bag to force extra innings.
