Wasn't that impressed with him today, it was my first extended look at him. His fastball wasn't as advertised and his curve was inconsistent.
I realize this was his first start back from the DL, but he also wasn't flashing his mid 90's heat as he was advertised to have before he went on the DL.
I don't think he's going to be a real good pitcher (ace type) if he doesn't. I realize that it's not all about velocity, but I think he'll settle in as a #2 or #3 starter if his velocity doesn't go back up.

He is overhyped. People perceived him to be the next Roger Clemens when he hadn't even won a game at the major league level. It's stupid that the Yankees are making him pitch at this level just to salvage their season.

Hughes won player of the week while at AAA for his rehab starts. So saying that he still isn't ready I could understand, but not as much as I would have believed before he went down. He simply had a bad start today. He was solid until the fifth, when he started to leave the ball up in the zone. His breaking pitches were respectable until then. And, you can't expect him to pitch like an ace yet. It is his first season. You are going to have your ups(no hitter through 6 1/3 before injury cut short start) and your downs(today).
The bats today were great as usual. Hopefully tomorrow Moose can ride the momentum of this club to a solid start.

I'm not expecting him to pitch like an ace right away, that's definitely unrealistic.
I just created this thread to say, with all the expectations for him the be the next ACE of the Yankees, I don't think he'll live up to that billing. He will be good, probably a #2 or #3 starter.
Not like he wouldn't be the first prospect not to live up to their billing.

He can be the ace of the Yankees. It's not hard to be better than Wang. Check out Wang's gamelog, half of his starts have been average or worse.

If all goes as planned, it'll be Hughes-Chamberlain-Wang. That is if everything continues as it is. Edit: And the thing about half of Wang's starts being average or worse... thats complete utter bullshit. newyork.yankees.mlb.com/stats/individual_player_gamebygamelog.jsp?playerID=425426&statType=2He's had two starts where he allowed atleast five runs. The most walks he's allowed in a game were four, and that happened on three occasions. He's allowed 10 or more hits only twice. Sure, he's probably not an ace on a solid play-off team, but to say half of his starts are average or worse is bull.

I'll go through them all. Blue is good, Black is average, Red is bad. 9 blue, 6 average, 5 bad. Of 20 starts, only 9 are good while 11 are average or worse.

Starts when he gives up four runs are not bad. Those, are average. The starts on May 10th and June 28th were bad starts.

Let's look at the 3 starts where he gave up 4 runs.
April 29, he blew a 1-run lead in a very important game. June 23, he had a 3 run lead over the Giants and blew that. That is VERY bad, especially against the Giants. July 24, he gave up 4 runs to the Royals, not great by any means.
2 of those 3 were not good.

Does that make him not a good no.2 or no.3 ?
