Closer look at D-Backs' picks
Daniel Schlereth, LHP School: Arizona. Scouting report: Schlereth has a closer's mentality to go with his 94- to 96-mph fastball, curveball and change-up. He misses plenty of bats, striking out 76 batters in 54 2/3 innings. Down the road: It's possible, though unlikely, Schlereth could reach the majors this season. When he does, the club sees him as a back-of-the-bullpen reliever.
Wade Miley, LHP School: Southeastern Louisiana. Scouting report: Miley potentially has three plus pitches - an 89- to 91-mph fastball, a "slurvy" breaking ball and a curveball. In 107 2/3 innings, he has 119 strikeouts, sixth-most in country. Down the road: Will get a chance to be a starting pitcher, and some have identified him as at least a No. 4 starter in the big leagues.
Bryan Shaw, RHP School: Long Beach State. Scouting report: The 49ers' closer, Shaw went to work with a low-90s fastball and a slider. Down the road: According to Baseball America, Shaw's stuff might not be good enough to close, but he could reach the majors quickly in a setup role.
Other picks on Day 1
104 overall: Kevin Eichhorn, RHP, Aptos HS (Calif.) 138 overall: Ryne White, OF, Purdue 168 overall: Collin Cowgill, CF, Kentucky 198 overall: Justin Parker, SS, Wright State

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks today announced their final 44 selections in Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft.
The D-backs drafted 51 players during the two-day event, with 7 players chosen yesterday. Left-handed pitcher Daniel Schlereth, out of the University of Arizona, kicked off Arizona's draft as the 26th overall selection.
Schlereth, 22, is 2-0 with a 1.81 ERA (11 ER in 54.2 IP) with 20 walks and 76 strikeouts in 34 games (all in relief) with one save, holding opponents to a .163 batting average heading into this weekend's NCAA Super Regional against the University of Miami. For his career, he is 8-2 with 16 saves, 2.98 ERA (46 ER in 139.0 IP) with 86 walks and 187 strikeouts, with a .195 opponents' batting average.
Schlereth was selected in the eighth round of last year's draft by the Oakland Athletics (270th overall) before returning to Tucson for a third season. He earned all-state honors his junior and senior years at Highlands Ranch High in Lone Tree, Colorado. He tossed six no-hitters in his high school career as the Falcons won 4 straight conference championships in baseball while he was on the roster.
The D-backs continued to focus their draft selections on college-level players, with 39 picks coming from the college ranks, including 31 players from four-year colleges and 8 from junior and community colleges. The D-backs also drafted 12 high school prospects.
Director of Scouting Tom Allison and his staff selected 27 pitchers (17 right-handers and 10 left-handers), two catchers, 11 infielders and 11 outfielders.
"Each of the 51 players we took this year was identified by our scouts throughout the country as having Major League talent," said Allison, in his second season as the D-backs' Director of Scouting. "Each one will define their own path to the big leagues."
The D-backs selected four local players today, beginning with left-handed pitcher Alex Sogard (26th round, 798th overall) out of North Carolina State University who went to Thunderbird High School in Phoenix. They also chose centerfielder Brendan Duffy (41st round, 1248th overall) out of Oral Roberts University who went to Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale. Directly from local high schools, Arizona selected shortstop Riccio Torrez (32nd round, 978th overall) and shortstop Andrew Maggi (47th round, 1419th overall) from Brophy College Prep High School in Phoenix.
The D-backs took two sons of former Major Leaguers in right-handed pitcher Kevin Eichhorn (third round, 104th overall), son of Mark Eichhorn, and right-handed pitcher Jesse Orosco (38th round, 1158th overall), son of former D-back Jesse Orosco. In addition, Arizona selected two brothers of current big leaguers, first baseman Luke Murton (33rd round, 1008th overall), brother of Cubs' outfielder Matt Murton, and centerfielder Brendan Duffy, brother of Pirates' outfielder Chris Duffy.
This is Arizona's 13th First-Year Player Draft since being awarded an expansion team from Major League Baseball in 1995.
