D-Backs: Scherzer down, Buckner up
by Don Ketchum - Jun. 13, 2008 06:58 PM The Arizona Republic
The team optioned right-hander Max Scherzer to Triple-A Tucson on Friday and called up right-hander Billy Buckner.
Scherzer, Arizona's top draft pick in 2007, pitched in 10 games (three starts), going 0-2 with a 2.90 ERA with 14 walks and 33 strikeouts in 31 innings.
Buckner was acquired from Kansas City in a trade for infielder Alberto Callaspo on Dec. 14. The Royals' second-round pick in 2004, he started 14 games for Tucson, going 4-5 with a 4.48 ERA.
Melvin said the move was not related to Scherzer's performance.
"His performance was terrific," Melvin said. "He was being developed as a starter, we put him in the bullpen, we put him in situations where he was able to get two or three innings. The last couple of days, we needed back-to-back days out of guys, and we're just not there with him yet."
Melvin said that Scherzer's role in Tucson hasn't been determined.
