Davis' strikeout totals improving
by Don Ketchum - Jun. 19, 2008 08:20 PM The Arizona Republic
The left-hander for the Diamondbacks has sent 15 opposing hitters walking back to the dugout empty-handed in his past two starts, but it isn't Randy Johnson.
Meet Doug Davis, strikeout man. Who would have thought?
He fanned eight Oakland hitters on Thursday after having seven last Friday against Kansas City. In his six starts before that, he had combined for 23, an average of 3.8.
"The main thing was getting ahead on that first pitch," he said. "They (Athletics) like to take a lot of first pitches. It's getting strike one and expanding the zone from there."
Davis pitched six innings, giving up one run on three hits and walked just two.

Getting 7 or 8 strikes out is not amazing, but I guess considering he was averaging 3.8 in his last 6 starts before that, its interesting even though its just a fluke. Anyone can have 2 lucky back to back starts.

I am amazed how this guy can strikeout so many. His fastball is like 85 on his best days!
