D-Backs pitch and catch with Chad Tracy
by Nick Piecoro - Jun. 26, 2008 12:09 PM The Arizona Republic
Questions and answers with the D-Backs' Chad Tracy.
What was your 'Welcome to the big leagues' moment?
"My first game. I got four hits. It was pretty cool. We went extra innings. I was 4 for 8 with my first double, first error, first hit, first RBI. I was really nervous. It's just like you'd imagine when you get to the big leagues. The game's fast. It takes you a little while to adjust. Your nerves are going. It takes you a little while to slow the game down."
What would you be doing if you weren't playing baseball?
"Coaching somewhere, in college probably. I don't know right now, I don't think I would go into coaching now. But you don't know. It's hard to say how you'll feel in life. It's hard to say."
Are you a talkative first baseman when someone reaches base?
"No, I keep it pretty serious. I'll say hello to the guys when they get there."
Same way when you're a base runner?
"Yeah. I'm concentrating on signs, on dirt-ball reads, trying to check out where the outfield is playing so I can take the extra base."
How did you spend your off-season this year when you weren't rehabbing?
"I did a lot of hunting. Deer hunting. I only shot three this year, so I don't have any good stories for you."
Who's the most uncomfortable at-bat in the majors?
"I've always said Billy Wagner. He throws 97, has a hard slider and is left-handed."
