Bill Stoneman, the architect of the lone World Series championship team in Angels history, is expected to leave his position as general manager Tuesday.
The Angels have called a news conference Tuesday morning for what the team described as "a major announcement." The Angels did not elaborate.
It is believed, however, that Stoneman plans to move into a consultant's role and will be replaced as general manager by Tony Reagins, the Angels' director of player development.
Reagins, who joined the Angels as an intern in 1991 and has run the club's minor league system for the last six seasons, could be mentored by Stoneman and veteran assistants Ken Forsch and Gary Sutherland.
Angels owner Arte Moreno, who inherited Stoneman when he bought the team in May 2003, signed him to a contract extension two months later. The revised deal expired this fall and provided Stoneman the option to stay on as a consultant.
In spring training, and again during the season, Moreno said Stoneman could remain as general manager if he chose to do so.
The Angels have appeared in the playoffs four times in the past six years. When Stoneman took over in November 1999, the Angels had made three playoff appearances in their first 39 years. They won the World Series in 2002, Stoneman's third season.
