Game 1 ratings down from '07

NEW YORK (AP) -- Television ratings for Game 1 of the World Series were down from last year.

The Philadelphia Phillies' 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays last night on Fox earned a 9.2 rating and 15 share, according to the network.

That's down 12 percent from the 10.5 for the 2007 Game 1 between the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies, but up 15 percent from the 8.0 for Cardinals-Tigers two years ago.

The rating is the percentage watching a program among homes with televisions, and the share is the percentage tuned into the broadcast among those households with TVs on at the time.

Not suprising. Look at the two teams involved this year, and the two last year. Last year was the comeback Rockies and the team with the most bandwagon jumpers ever, the Sox. This year we have the comeback Rays and...err... the Phillies.

The ratings were down because all the stupid people in Philly had no idea what channel they were on.

If it had been the Dodgers vs. Red Sox it would have been one of the highest rated WS ever, much like the Lakers vs. Celtics Final, when both a West Coast team and a East coast team are involved it equals huge ratings. Oh well, to he11 with Fox.

Thus far, the World Series has received an 8.1/14, down 24 percent from the 10.6/18 for a four-game sweep by the Boston Red Sox over the Colorado Rockies last year. This year is 20 percent behind the current record low for a full World Series, the 10.1/17 for the St. Louis Cardinals' five-game victory over the Detroit Tigers in 2006.

In an unprecedented move, Major League Baseball cancelled the 2008 World Series today, citing "overwhelming lack of interest."

This year's contest, featuring the Philadelphia Phillies and some other team, will be the first-ever World Series to be yanked before completion, but in the words of one baseball executive, "We're fairly sure no one will notice."

The decision to pull the plug on the Series came last night after the fifth game of the contest was rain-delayed and suspended with the score standing at something to something.

Some guys were on base and another guy was pitching when the rains came, but no one in the stadium showed a flicker of interest in the outcome.

"Enough already," said baseball commissioner Bud Selig. "Let's put this thing out of its misery."

At Fox Broadcasting, executives were reportedly "deliriously happy" about the cancellation of the low-rated Series and immediately announced plans to replace it with reruns of "Family Guy" and "House."

In Philadelphia, slugger Ryan Howard was philosophical about the decision to pull the Series: "I wasn't really following it - who was ahead, anyway?"
