- Today, the Reds picked up the options of left fielder Adam Dunn, first basemen Scott Hatteberg, and catcher Javier Valentin. They also declined the option on relief pitcher Eddie Guardado. For more information on their contracts, what I think that should have done(which they ended up doing) and why, go here.
As you can tell from my opinions, I think that the Reds did all the right things. Dunn will hopefully get signed to an extension, and if he doesn't, then it would be nice for the Reds to get something for him through trade. With Hatteberg, the Reds can keep him to mentor young first basemen Joey Votto, or try to get something for him in trade. Because his contract is very cheap, picking him up was a no brainer. With Valentin, it was also an easy decision. He gives the Red a cheap power-hitting switch hitter of the bench, who can start games at catcher or give a backup option when David Ross starts. Guardado's contract was way too much for an old player coming back from Tommy Johns Surgery. Hopefully the Reds can try to work out a cheaper deal for him.
- The Reds also announced today that video/administrative coach Johnny Narron would not be returning. The big thing about this is that he is outfielder Josh Hamilton's friend, and has really helped him over the years. Hopefully this will not affect Hamilton's future as a Red.
- Johnny's brother Jerry Narron, the awful previous manager of the Reds is back in the game. It was announced today that he will be the new Red's president, which was a huge surprise to many. Please, don't overreact. It's just a joke. Jerry is just is the discussion of getting the third base coach job in Texas.
Happy Halloween!
