Very interesting query on a day without any real Reds news. Terence Moore, in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote this article. In it, Moore says how he wants Reds right fielder Ken Griffey Jr. to go to Atlanta. He thinks Griffey would be a great fit for the braves open center field spot. He also says how the Reds would pay half of Griffey's salary if he was traded to the Braves. I don't really get why, but he says it like it's written in Griffey's contract. Also, Griffey is no longer a center fielder. He simply isn't fit enough for it anymore, and would break down like he is known for. My final complaint with this article is that this guy says the Reds aren't going anywhere anytime soon. In the NL Central, that is not true. I'll get into why the Reds can contend for the division later in the offseason.
But lets talk about the idea of Griffey going to Atlanta. The big issue that stands out if the Reds were to make this deal is that the Reds and Braves share the same weakness, which is starting pitching. The only starting pitcher that I think the Braves would be willing to give up is JoJo Reyes, who did not impress me at all in the short time he was up with the Braves last season. I think that if Griffey were to go to the Braves, the Reds would want shortstop Brent Lillibridge. This guy was the Braves minor league player of the year, while being only twenty-four years old. But again, all of this talk is pure speculation of Moors part. But in the offseason, when is there not any speculation?
- Kris Benson of Baltimore filed for free agency today, after missing all of last year with major arm surgery. I really want the Reds to go after this guy, or other starting pitchers like him. He wouldn't cost too much, and has a chance at becoming a solid pitcher again. The Reds can afford to take chances on these types of players, and I feel that they will need to do that if they cannot find starting pitching through a trade or get one if the top five starting pitchers available in free agency.
