Here are the moves that I would do if I was the Reds GM.
- Trade Edwin Encarnacion to the Yankees for starting pitcher Ian Kennedy
Obviously the Reds biggest need is starting pitching. Well, the Reds instantly get a guy who will be a number five starter at least heading into 2008. And if he can't do that, then he can be put into a bullpen spot. He showed that he is capable of doing that with the Yankees last season. Getting rid of Encarnacion hurts, but I think that you would have to pull the trigger if you can get a pitcher such as Kennedy.
- Sign starting pitcher Carlos Silva
Silva is still young and a ground ball pitcher. He'll be fairly expensive, probably in the $8-12 million a year range, but I think the he'll be worth it.
- Trade Ken Griffey Jr. to the Mariners for catcher Jeff Clement
I really hope that the Reds try to trade Griffey over the offseason. Clement is a pretty good catching prospect who might be able to start next season.
- Sign Japanese relief pitcher Hitoki Iwase
With the success of Okajima, Iwase might be a popular choice for teams looking to bolster their bullpen, but I think that the Reds will be able to get him. He would be able to make an impact on the Reds bullpen in 2008.
- Try to dump Mike Stanton off somewhere
Hopefully some stupid team would be willing to take this over payed fat left hander, and hopefully the Reds try to dump him off somewhere.
- Trade Ryan Freel for prospects or bullpen help
Freel is just not that great of a hitter anymore. There will without a doubt be some teams that will want him if the Reds put him on the block.
- Sign relief pitcher Kerry Wood
Dusty Baker and Kerry Wood have remained in touch since Baker managed the Cubs. Wood would be a very nice addition to the Reds bullpen, and could also start if the Reds desperately needed another arm in the rotation,
Rotation:
1. Aaron Harang
2. Bronson Arroyo
3. Carlos Silva
4. Homer Bailey
5. Ian Kennedy/Johnny Cueto/Tom Shearn/Bobby Livingston/Matt Belisle
Bullpen:
Closer: Jared Burton(R)
Setup: Bill Bray(L)
Setup: David Weathers(R)
Middle: Kerry Wood(R)
Middle: Hitoki Iwase(L)
Middle: Jon Coutlangus(L)
Long: Someone who didn't make 5ht rotation spot
Lineup:
1. Josh Hamilton(L)/ Norris Hopper(R)(platoon0- CF
2. Jeff Keppinger(R)- 3B
3. Joey Votto(L)- 1B
4. Brandon Phillips(R)- 2B
5. Adam Dunn(L)- LF
6. Jay Bruce(L)- RF
7. Alex Gonzalez(R)- SS
8. Jeff Clement(L)- C(also other available catchers on bench)
9. Pitcher
Bench:
Jorge Cantu- 1B, 2B, LF
Javier Valentein- C
David Ross- C
CF platoon
Scott Hatteberg
*If needed, a catcher could be sent down, traded, or released to make way for Buck Coats, Paul Janish, or other bullpen arm.
So what do you guys think about this team?
