Former Mets manager and Yankees icon Willie Randolph has been named bench coach of the Brewers under new manager Ken Macha, SI.com has confirmed.
Randolph was fired by the Mets early last season after the team got off to a slow start following a collapse at the end of the 2007 season when they lost a seven-game lead in 17 games. Randolph interviewed for the Brewers' managerial job that went to Macha a couple weeks ago.
News of Randolph's hiring was first reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Randolph, 54, had a career record of 302-253 with the Mets and he led New York to the playoffs in 2006. His .544 winning percentage with the Mets ranks second only to Davey Johnson (.588).
In addition to his managerial experience, Randolph spent 11 seasons with the New York Yankees as third base coach (1994-2003) and bench coach (2004). He was a part of four World Series championship teams with the Yankees.
The six-time All-Star second baseman had an 18-year playing career spent primarily with the Yankees (1976-88).
